History of Art and Architecture

Annual Anita Glass Memorial Lecture

The lecture is sponsored by the Anita Glass Memorial Fund through the Department of the History of Art and Architecture.

The 2019 Anita Glass Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Professor Jonathan Hay (New York University/IFA). His lecture is titled, A Visuality of Noise: Paintings by the Ming Dynasty Artist, Xu Wei (1521-1593). Hay’s research takes “painting out of its usual artificial isolation in modern scholarship from other artistic practices and the visual environment” in the belief  “that a healthy future for the discipline will require a shift toward active dialogue with contemporary scientific thinking and with the conceptual heritages of non-Western traditions.” This event is free and open to the public. A reception to follow.

Jonathan Hay is the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Professor of Fine Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. He has published on Chinese art of widely varying periods and also writes on theoretical questions in art history. He is currently trying to finish two books, one an epistemological history of Chinese painting, How Chinese Paintings Know the World, and the other a work of historiography, Before Art History: 4.000 years of Historical Writing on Art.
