Among our graduate students, six have received significant international awards: Allison Pappas was awarded three fellowships including a grant from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Peter Levins received a Title VIII Fellowship for Summer 2020 from the US Department of State. Erica Kinias has been awarded the John Leyerle CARA Prize for Dissertation Research from the Medieval Academy of America. Josie Johnson received a Joan and Stanford Alexander Award from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for dissertation completion, and Emily Monty received a Kress Institutional Fellowship at The Bibliotheca Hertziana through 2020-2021. Finally, Laura Chilson-Parks has received a Fulbright Study/Research Award for 20-21.
Laura joins her current HIAA graduate colleagues Emily Monty, Peter Levins, and Bill Skinner all past recipients of the prestigious Fulbright. Laura’s award is to support her dissertation research in France on the 14th century fortifications and gardens of Margaret of Flanders. “Not only will this research give Margaret overdue credit for her involvement in the rebranding of the duchy of Burgundy and the course of northern European art,” says Ms. Chilson-Parks, “but it will also challenge the problematic, anachronistic concept of patronage that has thus far limited the scope of the involvement of medieval women more generally."
Department Chair, Evelyn Lincoln says, "While some of the travel for undertaking this work will need to be delayed because of the pandemic, the recognition that HIAA students have received in terms of the sheer number of awards, over such a variety of geographical, historical and theoretical research models, gives us hope for the future of innovation and creativity in our department and in the field."
