The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World seeks submissions for The Stories Objects Tell, a campus-wide art show that responds to the question: What can we learn from ancient art and architecture?

All members of the Brown community — students, staff, and faculty — are invited to submit 2D, 3D, and literary works. Throughout the months of February and early March of 2022, the Institute hosted Open Collection hours on Thursday and Friday mornings, welcoming visitors to engage, in-person, with artifacts that have lived multiple lives, and withstood the weather of centuries. A large portion of these objects are also catalogued online and available for digital browsing. The collection consists of vessels, lamps, figurines, lithics, sherds, and more.

Submissions may address specific objects in the Joukowsky’s collection, or the field of archaeology in general. For inspiration, History of Art and Architecture recommends two poems: “Archaeology” by Charles Wright, and “Three Minutes with Mingus” by William Archila. Accepted pieces will receive a $50 prize.

The opening for the exhibit will take place on Thursday, March 24, 2022, from 4:00-5:00 pm.
