PhD student Feier Ying has been awarded the June and Simon K.C. Li Fellowship in East Asian Garden and Landscape Studies from The Huntington. The provides fellows a full-year residence at the East Asian Garden Studies Library with a stipend of $50,000.
Feier's project examines how landscape painters in late imperial China transformed their interim lodgings and travel hubs into floating workspaces, elegant gathering venues, and mobile art markets. She considers gardens to be both kinesthetic and multi-sensory spaces, as well as integral artistic workspaces. Therefore, Feier proposes to study album paintings from the collections of The Huntington Library and LACMA to explore the interconnectedness of boats, waterworks, and gardens, highlighting themes of fluidity, mobility, and sensory engagement in Jiangnan.
Congratulations, Feier!
