Visiting Assistant Prof. Annie Maloney Takes Class to Visit The Breakers Mansion

Thanks to a generous field trip grant from the Brown Arts Institute (BAI), students enrolled in the course HIAA 0051, “Roman Baroque Palaces as Theaters of Power” were taken to the Breakers Mansion in Newport to experience an approximation of palace architecture as it relates to course content. The Newport Breakers Mansion is heavily modeled on the Italian palaces we studied throughout the semester. Students were given a scavenger hunt form and asked to identify details in the Breakers mansion that corresponded to content from the course, such as architectural ornament, classicizing decorations, functional spaces for individuals living and working at the Breakers, and the arrangement of space.
