This year, the Providence Preservation Society's Festival of Historic Houses goes MODERN and stretches to an entire week of programs that explore moderism in Providence in the period 1950 to 1990.

The Festival runs October 5-11, 2025.

HIAA will host a PPS symposium on Friday, October 10 titled Providence Modern (1945-1995): Architecture, Design, Planning, Culture.

The symposium features presentations from the cultural historians, architects, designers, artists, and independent researchers who know this period of Providence’s design and urban history best. Come for presentations on Ira Rakatansky, Bill Warner, and Friedrich St Florian; modern landmarks like the Providence Post Office (1960) and Hurricane Barrier (1966); and the histories and legacies of urban renewal.
