Congratulations to Julia Clark, ‘26 HIAA and Biology, for receiving the esteemed Enid Wilson Undergraduate Fellowship Grant! Funded in part by the Enid Wilson Research Grant awarded by the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University, the award will support Julia’s winter session travel to Greece to conduct research for her senior honors thesis project titled “A River Runs Through It: How Water Connects Aphrodite to Women’s Power and Subjugation Through Geography, Ritual, and Sculpture.”
This research will take her to Athens, Corinth, and Rhodes for on site research at sanctuaries and museums to explore how Aphrodite’s aquatic origins, as described in myth, were materialized in temples, sculptures, and ritual vessels, and how these manifestations connected Ancient Greek women to divinity, to one another, and to themselves. This research aims to uncover how water, both real and symbolic, shaped the spiritual, social, and gendered experience of ancient women through their worship of Aphrodite.
Congratulations, Julia!
