History of Art and Architecture

Marthe Rowen is an architect, educator and artist, and has been teaching at Brown since 2022. She has been an architect for over 40 years, with a career in practice bookended by teaching; in her decades of experience, practice and teaching have been intertwined, with a signficant body of her professional work and teaching pedagogy devoted to alterations, additions and the adaptive re-use of historic buildings and cultural preservation. She has taught design studios, courses, and study abroad programs in Architectural Design, Materials, History/Theory, and Freehand Drawing, at many institutions across the country, including Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Arizona State University, Roger Williams University, and Princeton University.. She currently divides her time between Providence and Martha’s Vineyard, where she has a thriving professional art practice, She holds an A.B. from Princeton University and an M.Arch from Columbia University.
