History of Art and Architecture

Sophie Higgerson gave two talks this year, the most recent being a graduate student lightning talk at the Society of Architectural Historians Conference in April 2025. Her talk stemmed from her dissertation research, and it was titled "Modern Altitudes: The Alps and the Making of Architectural Modernism, 1912-1939."

Higgerson also gave a talk at the New England Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians' (NESAH) Director's Night in February, called "The Mechanics of Obscurity: Lois Welzenbacher and Modernism's Margins." The latter is on a side project on the Austrian modernist Lois Welzenbacher, who was the only Austrian architect included in the seminal 1932 MoMA exhibition of modern architecture curated by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock; that project has been partially funded with a research grant from the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies.
